How to Get Good Wi-Fi in Your Garden Room.

At Cosy Garden Rooms, we design and build spaces that are made to be used every day. Home offices, studios, gyms and places to relax and watch TV and one thing is essential: good internet.

Many customers ask us how to get strong Wi-Fi into their garden room. It’s a good question, because garden rooms are often situated at the end of the garden and built with high-performance insulation and glazing, which is great for comfort and energy efficiency, but can make Wi-Fi signals harder to reach.

The good news is there are several effective solutions. The right one depends on how far your garden room is from the house, how you plan to use it, and how reliable you need the connection to be.

Why Wi-Fi Can Be Challenging in Garden Rooms

Most home routers are designed to serve indoor spaces. Once a signal has to pass through external walls, insulation and glazing its strength can drop considerably.

Even garden rooms that are relatively close to the house can experience weak or unstable connections. This is especially noticeable when video calling, streaming, or using multiple devices at the same time. Understanding this early helps avoid frustration later.

Wi-Fi Extenders and Boosters

Wi-Fi extenders are the simplest starting point. They work by picking up your existing Wi-Fi signal and broadcasting a new Wi-Fi signal, boosting the signal further from your router.

For garden rooms that are closer to the house and used for internet browsing, boosters can work and they are a cheap and easy solution, plus, they are quick and easy to install.

Extenders do have their limits. Since they boost your Wi-Fi by creating a new Wi-Fi signal, speeds are usually reduced and reliability can vary. You may need to set your mobile devices to connect to both networks; the home and boosted network. For full-time home working or high-bandwidth use, a more robust option is worth considering.

Mesh Wi-Fi Systems

Mesh Wi-Fi systems are popular; they give more consistent performance without complex installation. Instead of relying on one router, a mesh system uses multiple nodes placed around the home and garden to create one seamless network.

As you move between the house and garden room, your devices automatically connect to the strongest point. This results in better speeds, fewer dropouts and a much smoother experience.

Mesh systems cost more than basic extenders, they are usually a few hundred pounds but they offer a much stronger, more reliable Wi-Fi. However, they still rely on the furthest device being close enough to pick up the signal from the rest of the Mesh network. If your garden room is a reasonable distance away and combined with the silver backed insulation in the walls, the signal may still struggle.

NB: It is worth asking your ISP (Internet Service Provider) as many will provide Mesh boosters that link to their branded routers out of the box making setup very simple and often included in your monthly fee.

Outdoor Wireless Access Points

For garden rooms located further from the house, or where Wi-Fi struggles to pass through walls and insulation, an outdoor wireless access point is a reliable wireless solution.

These are mounted externally on the house and are designed to deliver a strong, focused signal over longer distances. They perform particularly well where garden rooms are 30–50 metres away or partially screened by trees etc.

While installation is more technical and may require professional setup, outdoor access points make sure you have a strong reliable signal – keeping everyone happy!

A Hardwired Ethernet Connection

For customers who want the fastest and most dependable internet possible, a hardwired Ethernet connection remains the gold standard.

This involves running a network cable directly from the main house to the garden room. Inside the garden room, a small wireless router or access point can then provide Wi-Fi and wired connections. This means plugging your devices in or creating another new Wi-Fi network.

Although installation requires consideration from the start, this approach eliminates interference altogether and provides the same level of performance you’d expect indoors. For garden rooms used daily for work or creative projects, it’s the most future-proof solution.

A Combination Hardwired Mesh System

Combining the best of both systems will give you the perfect setup. That is the benefit of a Mesh system, one network name throughout the whole property and garden room combined with the strength of signal provided by a hardwired ethernet cable.

Most Mesh points have a network socket on the back of the device. In your garden room, plug your hardwired network cable into the back of the Mesh point and your Wi-Fi signal in the garden room will have the same name as the home Wi-Fi and be as strong as if you are standing next to the router in the house!
