A summerhouse had occupied this spot in a lovely garden in Sheffield for many years, but it had seen better days. The owners wanted to replace it with a fully insulated garden room that they could use for entertaining family and friends all year round.

As part of the project we removed and disposed of the old summerhouse before work started on the new 5m x 4m garden room.

BEFORE - THE OLD SUMMERHOUSE

A natural finish for a mature garden

Surrounded by established trees, hedges and shrubs the garden has a very natural feel, and the owners wanted the new building to sit comfortably within its surroundings, without the maintenance of real timber.

Composite cedar slatted cladding was chosen for the front and right elevation, giving the most visible sides of the building a warm, natural appearance.

Hardie Plank anthracite cladding was used on the left and back of the room. This fibre cement cladding is maintenance free and is less expensive than the slatted cladding, Mixing the two materials is a sensible way to put the premium cladding where it is seen and the maintenance free Hardie board where it isn’t.

Designed for year-round use

The new 20m² garden room is fully insulated and fitted with far infrared heating; 2 x 600 watt panels and 1 x 300 watt panel.

AFTER - COMPOSITE SLATTED CEDAR GARDEN

The room has anthracite aluminium windows and doors. Triple sliding patio doors and three windows bring plenty of natural light into the room and open it up to views of the garden.

Internally, the room has white painted grooved wall boards, a plain white ceiling and light chestnut laminate flooring, creating a light, neutral finish.

The owners had a family garden party planned and wanted the room ready in time. From removal of the old summerhouse and installation of the concrete base to completion of the new garden room, the entire project took just five days.

This was a straightforward summerhouse replacement, but a significant upgrade in quality, longevity and usability, providing the owners with an attractive, insulated space they can enjoy with family and friends throughout the year.
