Project Spotlight: Artist Garden studio, Warrington.

This recent installation in Warrington is a 5m x 3m (15m²) artist studio. The Leith's approached us looking for a dedicated, year-round artist studio for Mrs. Leith, a fine artist, who wanted a separate studio away from the main house positioned within their large garden. The brief centred on two essentials: plenty of natural light for detailed work, and a solution that would mitigate the flood risk posed by the sunken brook in their garden.

To maximise natural light, we designed the room with extensive glazing: patio doors on the front elevation and two symmetrical full-height corner windows at the rear. This layout ensures consistent daylight throughout the day. To protect the structure long-term and reduce flood risk, the garden room was built on a raised concrete base. A custom decking step was then added to manage the increased door threshold height.

Externally, the 15m² studio is designed for both style and minimal maintenance. It is clad in maintenance free Hardie Plank composite fire cement weatherboard in Slate Grey, complemented with anthracite UPVC doors and windows. A 600mm front overhang adds interest and a little extra weather protection.

Inside, the contemporary finish keeps the space bright and inviting, with brilliant white grooved walls and a plain board ceiling. Underfloor heating and light grey laminate flooring ensure year round comfort. The workspace is completed with eight internal dimmable spotlights and three exterior canopy lights.
