Project Spotlight: Bespoke Garden Gym, Guildford.

Designed as a bespoke gym, this insulated garden room in Guildford was built exactly to the customer’s requirements. Measuring 5.8m x 3.6m, this 21.9m2 build offers everything needed for a high-performance home gym while blending beautifully into its surroundings.

To accommodate equipment and allow for a full range of movement, the garden room was built with an apex roof reaching 4m externally, providing a vaulted ceiling of 3.4m internally. The result is an airy, open space that doesn’t feel cramped, even with gym equipment in place.

Groundwork and Structure

An existing concrete base on-site was extended, reinforced and deepened to ensure a strong, stable foundation suitable for gym use. As the building sits 2 meters from all boundaries’, planning permission was not required.

Charred Larch Feature Cladding

To create a striking, natural finish, the front and left elevations were clad in fully charred larch using the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique. This Japanese method of charring timber not only creates deep black tones and beautiful texture but also naturally enhances weather resistance and protects against rot and insects. For areas less visible, we installed black composite cladding to reduce maintenance requirements while keeping costs sensible.

Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese method of charring timber to protect it naturally while creating a timeless, modern appearance. At Cosy Garden Rooms, we offer charred larch alongside other charred timber options to help your garden room stand out with character.

Finishing Details

The building features a black shingle roof and a canopy fitted with customer-supplied external spotlights and lighting.

Warm, Natural Interiors

Inside, the vaulted ceiling and walls are clad in special-order beech, chosen for its fine, even grain and warm, earthy aesthetic. This durable, mechanically strong wood requires no painting, offering a calming and natural environment.

The space is completed with 12 spotlights, black aluminium doors and windows, and a light chestnut laminate floor for a clean, practical finish.
