When Fran in SW11 contacted us she wanted to replace an old shed and lean-to that had outlived their usefulness. The goal was simple: create a secure, low-maintenance, small garden office that would make the most of a small courtyard garden.

Working with limited space

Space is at a premium in London, and this project was no exception. The new garden room needed to fit neatly into the corner of Fran’s courtyard without blocking the gates. She also wanted it to sit square in the courtyard, but the wall it was being built against was at an angle. Our solution was a slightly wedge-shaped structure: 1.9m at the back, widening to 2.25m at the front, with a total floor area of 7.6m².

Durable and low-maintenance

The building is clad in grey slate composite panels with anthracite uPVC doors and windows — materials chosen for their strength, easy upkeep, and smart modern look. Inside, grooved wall panels and plain board ceilings keep the finish simple and practical. For added security, the structure includes an extra layer of OSB security boarding.

A compact, functional office

The result is a modern, durable garden room that blends seamlessly into its courtyard setting. Designed to last with minimal maintenance, it provides Fran with a bright, practical office space in place of the tired old shed.

A small garden office with a flat roof, french doors with a window either side, it is light grey with dark grey windows and doors and step.
