Garden studios are the ultimate creative sanctuary for artists of all disciplines. Purpose-built and fully customisable, these spaces offer the ideal environment to explore your craft—whether you're painting, sculpting, illustrating, or sewing.
One of our recent projects a Bespoke Artist Studio in Cambridge demonstrates just how much can be achieved, even in a small footprint. This bespoke artist studio, measuring just 3.5m x 2.1m (7.4 square metres), has turned a disused corner of the garden into a bright, fully equipped creative space.
BEFORE AFTER
A Creative Sanctuary in Cambridge
Designed around the client’s specific artistic needs, this small garden studio proves that you don’t need a large space to create something special. Internally there is space for a desk, easel, comfortable chair and dedicated storage.
Natural light was a key consideration. Sliding doors on the front elevation and a tall side window with an opening section allow daylight to stream in throughout the day. The real wow factor comes from above—a 1-metre rectangular roof lantern that bathes the room in soft, overhead light, creating an atmosphere that supports creativity and focus.
The project was completed in three days, from concrete base to final detailing. As it falls within permitted development rules, there was no need for planning permission—making this transformation fast and stress-free.
Tailored Features for Artistic Needs
For this project, the client chose a clean and contemporary finish. White grooved walls, a seamless ceiling, and light grey laminate flooring provide a neutral backdrop that won’t compete with the work being created. Year-round comfort is maintained with a wall-mounted infrared heater, while double glazing and built-in ventilation protect both the artist and their materials.
Stylish and Sustainable Design
The exterior is as carefully considered as the interior. Hardie® Plank maintenance free composite cladding in a two-tone scheme—Monetary Taupe to the front and left, and Anthracite to the back, right, and footer.
Topping it all off is a living sedum roof, blending the studio into its natural surroundings while enhancing thermal performance and biodiversity. The green roof also frames the skylight beautifully, thanks to the variation in plant tones. A 300mm roof overhang adds a sleek architectural touch while providing a little extra shelter from the elements.

What the Client Said:
“Building the studio on-site meant the structure fits perfectly into the space available. The team were very quick and efficient and small details were tweaked on the fly, especially regarding the green roof. Would definitely recommend them.”— Mike Barker, Cambridge
